Saturnia is an ancient village dating back to the Iron Age.

Said to be the first ‘city’ of the peninsula it had its heyday during the flourishing Etruscan-Roman era.

Noteworthy are the Roman city walls and the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, but the most significant monument is the Roman Gate (Porta Romana).

There are sites of significant historic, naturalistic and tourist interest less than an hour’s drive from Poggio Bertino e.g. the Argentario Coast (45 km), Monte Amiata at an altitude of 1700 m (45-minute drive), The Tuff or Tufa Stone Cities (Le Città del Tufo): Sovana (25 km), Pitigliano (20 km) and Sorano (30 km). A ‘must see’ and also within easy reach is Bolsena and the lake.
